More than cars are coming up North
In continuing with our data analysis - we determined that in 2009 - of the 124,421 vehicles imported
- -28,257 Passenger Vehicles,
- -21,958 Trucks
- -23,500 Trailers
- -8,050 Motorcycles
- -4,422 Snowmobiles and
- -1,151 Buses - there are more categories but these are the major ones.
- -68,510 were Commercial (imported by a company)
- -55,911 were personal imported by a person like you and me.
Somebody is savings money on these imports - if each one saved only $2,000 this means $248,842,000 saved - ($249 million.)
Vehicle Imports in 2008 were 239,929. If $2,000 was saved on each one - that makes $480 million saved by Canadians.

Serge, interesting data. The take-up rate on overall personal imports is 45%. Did RIV indicate what the rate is for passenger vehicles alone? If 45%, it would mean about 12,700 cars were personal imports. Go Habs!

Hi I’ll look at some numbers tomorrow - right now - it is YES go Habs go.

Total 14,814 Your estimate PJ was very close. I hope this helps. It’s interesting as when a buyer uses a broker it must be classified under commercial. Please ask away for this type of questions. Being an accountant, I love to see what trends are hidden in the numbers.

Just for the fun - I checked the Porsche 1,407 imported in 2009 of which 625 were personal. There must be a very nice price difference on this car.

Thx Serge; a 52% rate + any brought in by individuals through a broker. Let’s watch as the numbers rise in 2010! By chance did they break the new car vs used car numbers down? (the problem with data is that one question leads to another!!). Now wouldn’t a Canucks-Habs final be great for the country.

Sorry no breakdown new - used - I guess they don’t want to give us too much data. We are still fortunate that they provide a certain quantity of data. The CBC reported that most imports were used. This would make sense since the car manufacturers are forbidding sales to any non-Americans. Looks illegal to me but hey I’m not a lawyer. You can sell to anybody as long as they are residents of the US. Do they do that to tourists and other importers. Sorry no TV’s, no souvenirs, no cameras, no alcohols, no books, no clothes - ahh it’s only for New Cars !!!!! Nothing to do with safety - just profits. thanks for participating on the forum and web site.
