Now here is a unique idea Mr. F!
We heard Flaherty is doing a road show to get input from Canadians on how to put us back into defecit and find jobs for un-employed auto workers. Our guess is that he also wants to create jobs by repairing our bridges and roads that are falling apart. Here is a unique idea!
Instead of doling out billions $$$ to the car companies, why not provide incentives to the North American car consumer to purchase any vehicle built in Canada or the U.S.!
One incentive would be to drop the GST and Provincial taxes. This could range from a 5% to 13% drop in price depending on the province you reside.
Another would be to re-introduce the “green” incentive. Make the rebate up to $7,500 for a Pruis as an example.
Provide Govt. backed 0 % percent financing.
Incentives like this would create a level playing field for a all Car manufacturers operating and manufacturing vehicles in Canada and the U.S.
So if by chance GM or Chrysler still can’t make it, at least the volume of business would just tilt over to the well run companies. The work force would do the same.
Of course these incentives would still apply if you purchased your car in the U.S. — real free trade — in a real free market —

I agree with you 100% almost!! Get the automaker, banker and federal/provincial government guys in the same room and come out with a combined package that includes manufacturer rebates, special govt backed financing, no PST or GST and a assured black-book trade in value to get older vehicles off the road but only for sales at Canadaian Dealers - I would call this a lean, green and mean incentive program - rather than a fat ineffective handout plan.
