Will Americans now Save $1000s and Buy in Canada?

Tag: ConsumersRobert Lamb @ 9:40 am

Recent swings in the exchange rate of the Canadian dollar could mean fantastic savings for our American cousins shopping for a Vehicle in Canada.

Please refer to this article from the exchange morning post titled : CANADIAN CAR PRICES NOW LOWER THAN U.S.

We would like to hear from some of our American cousins on this opportunity.  CarsWithoutBorders continues to support Automobile Fair pricing!

We wonder if the Canadian dealers will now jump on the bandwagon and incite Americans to come north, or will they be simply bullied by their head offices to raise prices in Canada to even the playing field?

Based on past experience, the Canadians will start raising prices.  or will they in this current economic environment?

What do our members and supporters think?  We would also like to hear from some of our broker friends, they always are ready to play both sides and usually are the first to pick up on these opportunities.

So what is the process, how can we help Americans save $1000s and shop in Canada?  We would like to hear from you.

I’m not sure they will save thousands. In the short term dealers in the U.S. are probably still willing to negotiate
deeper discounts, in the long term our prices will go back to where they were at the start of 2008. Now if the dollar
ever falls back into the 60’s, that’s a different story. Also, one example of being able to save $3000 does not represent
the market overall. Most cars still have a 25% or more price differential before conversion, putting them at about
par or a bit cheaper in the U.S. after factoring in exchange.

Theoretically, Americans could save a few thousand dollars by buying cars in the under $30k class in Canada. However, the PDI fee will quickly eat into their savings and if PST/GST or HST is applicable then forget it. Also, I’m sure the manufacturers have already forbidden Cdn dealers to sell to Americans just like they did to U.S. dealers when the dollars were at par.

Higher end cars that cost 40% to 50% more in Canada will have to wait until the USD is worth $1.45 CAD before the prices will just be equal.

This article sounds like fear mongering to incite Canadians to panic buy. First off, not all manufacturers “lowered” prices. From what I recall, it was only Toyota that officially lowered them, and that was after almost a YEAR of the dollar being close to parity. Most of the other manufacturers offered temporary “incentives” as a means of attracting customers. Secondly, from my research it still looks like many brands (especially the high end ones) are still cheaper in the US, just not by such a high margin anymore.

Of course, the exchange will give fuel for the Canadian dealers/manufacturers to try to RAISE their prices, but in this “uncertain” economy, perhaps they should consider the long term repercussions of such action, especially since the exchange rate is so volitile. It only took two weeks for it to jump over 25%, so it could reverse just as fast.

as is historically the case US dealers could raid us for used.

Good thing the canuck car companies didnt’ slash prices 10s of thousands like was called for.. now they’d have to raise them again and have people take to the streets with torches. lmfao.
