CarsWithoutBorders, was founded on November 18th,2007.  A group of Canadians banded together, collaborating over the internet, to fight oppressive and undemocratic Canadian Laws and Regulations that prevented Canadians from saving thousands of dollars by purchasing vehicles in the U.S.   Our objective was to get our cars on the road and obtain fair automobile prices for Canadians. Well we now have our cars, but we have some ways to go on the issue of fair pricing!

As of June, year to date, 151,638 Vehicles were imported into Canada from the U.S. Of this number, approximately 70,000 individual Canadians did it themselves saving over $350 Million.  These numbers represent a significant increase from last year.  Read the entire story at our website:  http://www.CarsWithoutBorders.com/about/

  1. PMRedmonton says:

I contacted Mike from the King dealership in Bellingham. He said $500 to send a Sonata to Sweetgrass, Montana for Albertans interested in a pick-up there.

  2. Pricenator says:

Since the Hyundai warranty is void in Canada, would it be worth buying one? Even if you could get a decent third party warranty, I’m not sure I’d want to buy from a manufacturer that does not stand behind their vehicles when you bring them across.

  3. PMRedmonton says:

What I want is a 4 cylinder mid-size sedan with good safety ratings, power driver’s seat, leather heated seats, esc. The sonata meets all these criteria. Since financing out of pocket, want something less than $25K.

The car is Sonata limited 4 cylinder is $7000 cheaper than a Camry XLE with heated leather seats and stability control in the US. It is also a better vehicle. I’m not afraid of Hyundai reliability anymore and have owned a santa fe for the last 1.5 years without a problem.

    Accord - no warranty

Altima - no warranty if bought new

ES350 - not much price savings compared to cdn and much more expensive

    Acura tl/tsx - no warranty

malibu - no warranty for first year when you really want one

    fusion - no esc

mazda 6 - ?, may not be willing to discount much on a just released model

    sebring/avenger/charger - no warranty

bmw/mercedes/audi/vw - too expensive, don’t like to buy european due to high cost and high expense for repairs

Any other ideas or rebuttals. I am interested in opinions as I am not absolutely committed to the Sonata yet.

  4. RobW says:

PMRedmonton, do you usually keep your cars until they die or do you upgrade every few years? If you plan to sell this car in a few years then I’d go with one of the Japanese brands like the Accord, Camry, or Mazda6 because they hold their value better. If not, then the Sonata is a good choice as well. All of the above including the Sonata are made in the U.S so they’re duty free.

I’m in a similar situation as you and am eager to see the new Mazda6 in a few weeks.

With respect to warranty, if there’s a problem we can easily bring the car to a U.S. dealership unless it’s undriveable in which case it can be towed there.

  5. PMREdmonton says:

RobW, well my current car is a 1998 Camry with 205K that I continue to nurse along - it is in good health so no immediate pressing need to get a new car but it is getting a little long in the tooth - so yeah, I’ve got no problem holding onto a car for a long time.

Mazda6 - will have to see when it comes out. Not necessarily a brand known for great reliability or resale either (except for maybe the Mazda3). The recent Motortrend article on it was pretty glowing but it will be a new model car with no reliability history. On the plus side, Mazda will honour warranty but won’t sell to Canadians. I can always do a deal through a broker if needed though.
