Robert goes shopping for a Volvo XC90!

After reading in late December that Transport Canada and the RIV, had taken all Volvos off the admissibility list and simply stated:

IMPORTANT: Volvo Canada has not provided information to TC on the admissibility of vehicles that are imported after January 1,2008. Effective January 1st, 2008, if you wish to import a U.S. compliant Volvo vehicle into Canada, you will have to contact Volvo Cars of Canada at 1-800-663-8255 to determine if the vehicle is admissible for importation, and to request the letter of admissibility required at the time of importation.

  • I decided to go shopping!
  • Last week I conducted my preliminary investigation using the Canadian and U.S. Volvo web sites.   Results including, Fuel Surcharge, RIV fees, Inspection fees GST and PST are:
    • $ 84,723 versus $60779.

  • Today I talked to Volvo Canada, a Volvo service department  in the Montreal area concerning compliance letters, and two salesmen, one in Canada and the other in the U.S.

  • I feel sorry for the folks working for the Canadian Volvo dealers; they are being set up for failure!

  • Guess which dealer had the better incentives!

  • Tune to this web site each day and find out the results of my spree!   Tomorrow, find out what Volvo Canada had to say!

A similar story line…………I want to purchase a new Audi S5 but it does not appear on the RIV list on
either admissible or non-admissible. So I diligently wrote Audi Canada and they basically said…we have no idea. So who exactly IS supposed to know? TC/RIV rely on the manufacturer to tell them what is/is not admissible. I want to go get it but I don’t want to hoop myself because of beaurocratic ineptness.

I called Volvo Canada and they explained the procedure to me. It sounds workable! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s entry!

Hey Robert, I am interested in hearing what you find out. I was looking at a C70 this Fall, and the price difference is $20K between the US can CND model. The US models has a few more extra choices, but essentially dressed the same. The RIV comment of checking with your Volvo dealer if a car is admissible is hilarious: most people in the dealerships have no clue what they are selling! - not much different from a Ford dealership …

Ah good ol’ RIV - they don’t have a clue what they are doing. I caught them on that
Volvo Admissibility issue - they stop responding to my e-mails - great tactic.

I called Volvo and if the Vehicle was on a previous RIV list ie. 2006 XC70, then its admissible and to contact RIV, so I contact RIV and they say to Contact Volvo.

Good luck in sorting through the run around.

I e-mailed Minister Cannon - so far no response.
