The big franchised Auto dealers, usually do not have the time, or the patience to cross border shop. They are able to buy at factory auctions, right here in Canada and they also get, so many trade ins, that they often have more used cars to dispose of, than they can handle. Small dealers, on the other hand, often have a hard time acquiring the inventory that they want, at wholesale prices and are therefor, more inclined to shop across the border. Some franchised dealers, particularly, if they are fortunate enough to have someone on staff, who can deal with the time and effort that is required, will import vehicles, if they happen to find what they want and at the right prices. Every dealer, just like every private individual, has to go through the same painful RIV process, when importing, unless, of course, the manufacturer does the importing for him. For example, if ABC FORD SALES, imported 100 used Ford Focus sedans, they would have to abide by all the same requirements that everyone else has to. If however, FORD MOTOR COMPANY had some lease returns available and imported them for ABC FORD SALES, then the entire RIV process, the need for a safety recall letter, the need for an admissibility letter, the need for a form 2, the need for a visit to Canadian Tire, the need to pay RIV $200.00, and the need to prove that the car has an immobilizer and in fact the need to prove anything at all, would evaporate, immediately. Do not blame a dealer for buying cars, where he has to, in order to stay competitive. Blame Transport Canada, RIV and the manufacturers, for trying to stop Canadians, from being competitive, also.
