EcoAuto rebates - time for action
We are unable to find the truth about the ecoAuto refunds - but then again they are not saying anything so no one is not not-telling the truth.
Here is my e-mail to the Assistant Deputy Minister. If you would be entitled to an eco-Auto refund, please register your case on the site - we will use the names from the site to support our position. If there is no action, CWB will escalate.
E-Mail to ADM - ecoAuto refunds
Are you entitled to the rebate? - check out over 30 models at TC’s site

Again, Transport Canada has it’s head in the sand, another “wishy-washy” answer to the Canadian Public. I wonder if they outsourced this eco-program out to the RIV, I know a retired Nortel employee and his wife that could manage this for a 10% of the rebate, but I imagine TC will go for their buddies at 50-100% , Seriously though, I would recommend everyone fill out and mail the form in. Once rejected then, mail a registered letter to TC threatening to take legal action, if not satified, within thirty days. If still nothing take them to “small claims court” for the rebate. It would be nice if everyone would do this all at once, we could publish all the letters on the web site… etc…
Transport Canada needs to work on the right priorities, the priorities of Canadians. And stop putting Cannon in ridiculous situations re : the new Combustion Laws… what a joke!!

I am in the same boat as Serge. I bought a 2008 Prius built Aug 2007, crossed the border Sept 16. I have not applied for an ecoAuto rebate on this vehicle.
I have filed for an ecoAuto rebate on a 2007 Prius I imported in July. I have received a courtesy letter to say that they received my application and that it would be processed in due course. There was no indication of whether the application would be accepted or rejected.
The website of FAQs concerning the ecoAuto program clearly states that the vehicles above would not qualify. I encourage this site in it’s endeavours to have the beaurorats correct he injustice the FAQ seems to indicate is being inflicted on Canadians who take care of their financial resources.
Also the Canadian Goverment will have collected more customs duty from the importers of new qualifying cars imported from the US than they get from the manufacturers if the vehicle was built off shore. The duty is paid on the value before freight of the imported vehicle and the manufturers would declare a lower price since the manufacturer’s value to the wholesaler/distributor would be less than the retail value which is the basis for a vehicle imported by us. I am ignoring and value manipulation that the manufacturers may use to reduce the total amount of the 6.1% customs duty. A 10% understatement of value results in a 10% reduction in the $ paid. I don’t know if the manufacturers play this game - given their experience with the imobilizer issue you can draw your own conclusions.
Do we need another petition, mp letter writing campaign, etc.?
This issue may justify a dedicated thread here to record the progess of individuals in righting this wrong.

We also have a separate thread on the forum for the eco-rebates.

In the Qestions & Answers the following q. w/its answer is stated:
“I bought an eligible vehicle in th United States, can I apply for the rebate?
Imported vehicles are not eligible for the ecoAUTO Rebate Program. Only vehicles that have been purchased or leased (12 months or more) in Canada on or after March 20th, 2007 are eligible for the rebate.”
Note that it says IMPORTED VEHICLES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. What is TC’s response concerning the Prius? All of them are imported. I don’t know of any that are made in Canada. Does the law discriminate against a private importer as against a mass importer like Toyota Canada? As far as I know Toyota Canada has not manufactured one vehicle since the company was incorporated. As far as I know all Toyota hydrids that are considered eligible are imported and I suspect that 90% of all eligible vehicles in the ecoAuto list are imported i.e. not manufactured in Canada.
Why the discrimination?

You are certainly right about hybrids being imported. Prius are all made in Japan etc.
If you haven’t done so, please register your case as we will use these cases in the future to discuss with Transport Canada and also please submit your rebate claim anyway, and I stated the reasons in earlier posts on the forum. If you have friends that also have a Prius or hybrids - all their support would be appreciated.
We see with the Bumpers, the BMW recall letters - the ecoAuto rebate - these are all barriers to protect the Manufacturer’s high profits in Canada.
