My condolences to the families of all these victims….It is unfortunate that the Gouvernment, RIV, and Transport Canada are putting their efforts on Immobilizers instead of insuring safe vehicles on the roads. It is easier to import a 15 year plus ++ car to Canada and not a brand new 2008 model……Something is not right here!!

Transport Canada has been putting it’s time and efforts, into trying to stop individuals from importing perfectly safe vehicles, instead of putting it’s energy into preventing real accidents. A grieving father was speaking on the news last evening, about how, some time ago, Transport Canada eliminated the requirement for a very important safety device on small airplanes. The man’s son and other people, including a three year old child, were killed, after attempting to make an emergency landing, in the forest, near Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island. Apparently, industry lobbyists, concerned about profits, succeeded in persuading Transport Canada, to back off on recommendations to mandate the particular device. The personal safety of Canadians, came second, to other considerations. This is exactly what is so wrong, with Transport Canada’s behavior, with regard to motor vehicle safety standards. Transport Canada appears to have done little to nothing, in many years, to enhance the standard of safety for people, while it continues to do everything possible to enhance the profit margins of the foreign owned, multinational manufacturers. Some time ago, A woman, who immigrated to Victoria from the U.S. was in tears, as a result of Transport Canada ordering her, to return her beautiful Mercedes C280, which she had owned, for many years, back to the U.S.. Transport Canada, told her that her bumpers did not conform and that she would not be allowed to modify them. She sold her car, in Washington State, in distress, at a great loss. She then went shopping in Victoria, for an inferior, less safe, older model car, which was all she could afford, after Transport Canada had worked it’s magic on her. Now we have families, on both coasts, grieving for their loved ones, in part, because Transport Canada, did not heed warnings, about real safety concerns. Such concerns, have apparently been taken, so seriously, in the U.S. and in other jurisdictions that authorities there, have acted to protect the public, something that Transport Canada, did not do. Canadians, from sea to shining sea, are mourning the loss of innocent lives. Let us all work hard, to force Transport Canada, to change, so completely, that these lives, shall not have been lost in vain. I am sure, that the thoughts and prayers, of all of us, are very much with those, who are grieving, right now.

Andrew I agree with you …..Transport Canada /RIV and the Gouvernment has always had its nose where it shouldn’t be!!…….Meanwhile we are getting JUNK vehicles in Canada over 15 years old with no problems and not allowing the new cars built by the same manufacturer into Canada….AS THE SONG GOES….ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY…………OPEN THE CASINOS,OPEN THE LIQUOR STORES LATE …LETS SELL THE BEER, AND LET THE DRUGS COME IN THROUGH THE BORDERS!!

First off, my heart goes out to the families of this school bus tragedy. Like anyone else the question that arises is how we can prevent this from happening ever again …
Andrew, I am reading what you are saying and can not agree more. It seems that TC is ruled by a “Not Invented Here” attitude - if you know what I mean. For that reason decisions become embroiled in (office) politics and get delayed. With respect to either cases you are referring to the US moved to enforce safety measures, why can’t TC do that?

Oh, look at this from the NHTSA site:
“Fatalities from 15-passenger van rollover van crashes have declined 35 percent since advisories began in 2001.”
“While Federal law prohibits the sale of 15-passenger vans for the school-related transport of high school age and younger students, no such prohibition exists for vehicles to
transport college students or other passengers.”
