Comments welcome - as we celebrate the holidays

Tag: Consumers, Our Teamsergelbergeron @ 10:34 pm

We are very happy to see all the owners getting their plates finally.  And today’s new RIV list seems to have a lot more admissible vehicles finally.

We have seen many comments around lawsuit - lawyers etc.  This has merit but Bob & I prefer the approach of rallying the people and pushing the politicians into action with  media help.  So a lawsuit is not an avenue that we are ready to explore at this time.

On the recall letters - it is very disturbing to see the outrageous price for a simple letter that takes 5 minutes - but you need to consider that you may be saving $5-10-15,000 on your purchase - so don’t hold back your purchase for this.  Maybe you can try to get the US dealer to get this for you as a sale’s condition.

We appreciate all your comments - please keep them nice, clean and concise.  We are not used to moderating web sites, but we are interested in good discussions on how to proceed in the next few weeks with the goals of having fair pricing in Canada.   And to get fair pricing we need to keep that US border open.

You may not see too much activity from our part in the next few days as we will try to get some R&R.   Seasons Greetings to all  from Bob and Serge.

The new list is updated on RIV/TC website along with instructions/explanation on new
    ammendments.

Trying to import a post sept 1st manufactured Cadillac Escalade. I have an immobilizer (just not CMVSS144). RIV is telling me that I need a letter from the manufacturer saying that I have an immobilizer. That is not what the law says. It says that at the time of the RIV inspection I have to prove that the vehicle has an immobilizer by showing one of three things 1)purchase agreement showing immobilizer 2) window sticker show immobilizer 3) letter from manufacturer. Anyone else having this problem.

  3. Guilty until proven innocent says:

Any bets the letter will cost you $500?

Keep calling and talking to different people at RIV. Maybe you will get a different answer.

  4. Cy says:

Shelley, go to the net for printout of standard equipment Escalade 2007 or 2008. Get Print-out and try to pass with that.

Escalade is equipped with Pass-Key 111 Plus Theft Deterrent System.
Fuel injection and starter will be immobilized if Compromised.

  5. Tim Hamilton says:

Toyota 2008 Tacoma ,the truck has an immobilizer ,the list says admissible, yet the eplanation states TOYOTA says the immobilizer does not meet Canadian Standard. So the way I read this is that TOYOTA is still dictating to RIV .Anyone read this different ,thanks

  6. Shaun and Sarah Oko says:

On my GMC Sierra all I had to show the guy doing the inspection was the plus sign with a circle on the key which shows that its chipped.

  7. Tim Hamilton says:

I have sent several emails in regards to a 2008 Toyota Tacoma truck in which I purchased in late November. The truck became inadmissible. Now that Transport Canada has cleared up this Immobilizer problem. When will the RIV LIST be updated to reflect the changes. The truck I purchased has the immobilizer on it. Tim Hamilton RESPONSE Hi Tim, Did you import a vehicle yet? The proposal was for the Canadian whoalready have imported and have a file with RIV. If you have not imported your vehicle then the admissibility list remains the same. 8. Shelly Hansen says:

Cy, I have faxed RIV the list of standard equipment, the window sticker and a letter from the dealer stating that there is an immobilizer. Hope it is enough. Serge was very kind to call RIV on my behalf and hopefully this will get worked out.

I am looking for any information on the lawsuit in the USA against the auto manufacturers who were prohibiting free trade when the tables were turned and American consumers were stonewalled when trying to buy new vehicles from Canadian dealers. The Canadian dollar was trading in the .62 cent range. Anybody have a link?

  10. Cy says:

Shelley, that’s great. I was able to import our vehicle in late October,(2008 Honda Civic) without a problem.

The only thing I did differently was deal with one lady via e-mail and request that she send form 2 via return e-mail, which she did.

Tell her the Cadillac has the best anti-theft system.

  11. Cy says:

Shelley, Cadillac Escalade Pass-key 111 plus theft Immobilizer System meets/surpasses CAN/ULC S338-98 as stipulated by IBC in ccnjunction with Transport Canada September 2007.

  12. Cy says:

Shelly, sorry I mis-spelled your name.

  13. Shelly Hansen says:

Cy, good to know. Still no form 2.

Since we can import car form US, Could you tell me what dealer did you buy your brand new CIVIC from? Did you have to pay full MSRP or pay profit above the invoice price?
    Thanks

    Thanks for you looking

  17. Cy says:

I probably paid MSRP or close to it.

I was not in a strong negotiating position when I purchasd.

I may have been the last Canadian to buy from this dealer in late October.

This dealer will no longer sell to Canadians upon threat of losing the franchise.

May I suggest that you contact Bill who posted a thread here. (see # 37 Dated Dec 20)

    Good luck.

  18. Cy says:

Intis, Check Dec 19 Item #37 Dated dec 20 for Bill.

This is a summary of the US Anti-Trust case with links to the court documents. I have not been able to
locate the actual settlement with Toyota yet.

  20. andrew timmis says:

Thank you RJMBC for finding this class action suit and posting it, for all of us to see. I have not had time to read it fully, yet, however it indicates that on February 24th, 2006, Toyota settled for Thirty Five Million $U.S. with the vehicle owners who sued in U.S.A.. Hopefully, this will help Canadians, to achieve similar justice in Canada. The more evidence that can be made available, the more it will help us.

  21. Shelly Hansen says:

Looks like RIV figured it out and I now have my Form 2. This has been a very stressful ride but happily it is over now. Happy holidays everyone. We really did something here.

  22. Robert Lamb says:

    Good news!

  23. Jack says:

The only way we can have fair pricing for Canadians is a little bit of transparency and accountability. The power RIV wields without having to provide reasons for it’s rules and regulations is a hindrance to fair pricing. Why do I need to ask a Canadian car company for a “Letter of Admissibility”? They should submit a list indicating which cars are and are not admissible and be held accountable to what the submit.

I got my car licensed and everything. Just disgusted with the low tactics used by Canadian Auto and even more disgusted that the government is going along with it.

  24. Costantino says:

I finally received my Recall Clearance Letter on Dec 24 2007 from BMW CANADA after waiting since Nov 15 2007……BY THE WAY THE LETTER IS DATED NOV 25 2007………TO DISCOURAGE CAR IMPORTING TO CANADA THEIR LETTERS ARE BEING SENT OUT 1 MONTH LATER……WHERE DID THEY FIND SUCH ASSHOLES AT BMW…THEY THINK THEY WILL WIN OUR BUSINESS THIS WAY!!
