New Eco Rebates help Canadians stay Home!

  • The Canadian Government just released its 2008 list of eco friendly vehicles, ( I hope they checked to see if they all met Canadian Safety standards!)  Rebates of up to $2000.  Are my tax dollars  subsidizing this?  Why not just let them buy the car in the U.S.?  Canadians would save more?  I wonder if the rebate also  applies as well to U.S. Market cars that Canadians want to buy….. it should!

  • Another good point may be that - Our buddies in Transport Canada are using this to pacify the Canadian Car manufacturers so they sign up to the new amendment!!!

Note: thanks for your help on this on Bob P Langelaan !!.

    I certainly hope that they are going to use this to pacify the Canadian Car manufacturers, I cannot understand why we have not gotten any up-date on their so-called consultations

    Here is the list (the link above provided by Robert deos not currently work!):

    BTW, the 2 door civic manual 5 speed (the one most youngsters want to buy) DOES appear to be on the list:

    “Honda Civic (2-door)
    Rebate: $1000
    1.8 L, 4 cylinder
    5-Speed Manual
    CFCR = 6.5 L/100 km”

    Cheers,

    Bob

    more rebate on a worse fuel efficient expensive car than a small efficient one that is cheaper! only because its a hybrid

    Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4×4
    Rebate: $1500
    3.3 L, 6 cylinder
    Continuously Variable Transmission
    CFCR = 7.7 L/100 km

    Toyota Corolla
    Rebate: $1000
    1.8 L, 4 cylinder
    5-Speed Manual
    CFCR = 6.3 L/100 km

    According to the ecorebate site:

    “I bought an eligible vehicle in the United States, can I apply for the rebate?

    Imported vehicles are not eligible for the ecoAUTO Rebate Program. Only vehicles that have been purchased or leased (12 months or more) in Canada on or after March 20th, 2007 are eligible for the rebate.”

    I’m pretty sure it’s against NAFTA for the government to subsidize and favour a domestic retailer over a US one.

    So, if we import gas-guzzler car, we have to pay the gas-guzzler tax at the border, but if we import an eco friendly car, we do not get the eco rebate…funny huh…
    Also for my understanding, the eco rebate is to encourage the use of the eco friendly cars, not to subsidize the Canadian car manufactures, which means imported or Canadian is not the issue here…
