Why Canadians cannot import a less expensive US car into Canada

Tag: Mediasergelbergeron @ 11:44 pm

With very few exceptions, no Canadian can import a vehicle from the US manufactured after September 1, 2007.

Canadians are welcome to go shopping in the US to benefit from lower prices but if you find a dealer who will sell you a new or used 2008 vehicle for significantly less than in Canada (which you will) – you can’t bring it back to Canada.   You can pick up a couple of sweaters, a big screen TV and a some appliances but don’t pick up a GMC, TOYOTA or HONDA truck to bring them back to Canada.  The vehicle can’t be registered in Canada so you might as well leave it at the border.

Why - Transport Canada has mandated that all vehicles imported into, or sold in Canada, must have an anti-theft device which is unique to Canada.  US vehicle manufacturers are claiming their US vehicles don’t meet the Canadian standard and have deemed many of their vehicles as Inadmissible.  Through not allowing for free trade, Transport Canada’s actions are hurting all Canadians.

Its is a complete bureaucratic disgrace that a Government Ministry can re-invent free trade as they suit fit to do so …. And at who’s cost ? The canadian citizen, who’s benifit ? Car manufacturers.
Car manufacturers fix car prices based on demand and what they believe their cars are worth in a given market/economy … If free trade was left to be what it is meant to be the Canadian manufacturers would have no choice but to lower their prices given that we could just go south and buy our cars. Why is transport canada helping car manufacturers in canada rip off the canadian citizens by giving them tools and participate in helping them do so ???
I am in the process of importing a car into Canada and I have to keep my fingers crossed that the list won’t change between now and then … what a joke !!!
Harper should put his pants on and clean out TC … and at the same time show car manufacturers who actually runs this country !!
