Told that if you purchase the car prior to November 1st, 2007 they will provide Form 2. Bought it late October. Now it sits in the garage with no country to call its own.
Our rights as consumers are being violated when we are not allowed to import a vehicle simply for the sole fact that it is from the United States. I could not believe, and still can’t, what i read in the newspaper. Canada is claiming that it is a anti theft system that is not up to canadian standards that is keeping the cars from the US from being imported into Canada. Followed up by, there are currently no aftermarket theft systems that will pass the requirements. SERIOUSLY xxx. If there are no aftermarket alarms xxx are all the other cars using that are so high tec and can’t be installed? Its not like every new car has the gps tracking system which you pay for monthly. That is an aftermarket feature you can buy!! Am I expected to believe that the stock security systems are better than a company that i pay monthly to watch my vehicle via satelite is not good enough as a stock alarm system? I am outraged at the Canadian government and the car manufactures. If you don’t want Canadian citizens to spend money in the United States maybe you should realize the only way to keep Canadians buying in Canada is to lower the freaking costs. Nobody would ever be able to justify to me how a lexus is $15,000 CND more in Canada in comparison to the United States. I hate you Canada.
Just called RIV - saying I was bring a new GMC truck manufactured after Nov 1 with an immomilizer - powerlock ( chosen because on the recommended list from the insurance bureau of canada)installed by the GMC dealer. Was told it wouldn’t be allow across the border because the manufacture vehicle’s safety has been tampered with. So much for Section 9.2. b -of Transport Canada explanation ( nov 23,2007 ) The CMVSS 114 can be amended by order in council to accept the existing FMVSS 114 (US) and eliminate the non tariff barrier thereby causing can/us prices to narrow
I have to commend you for this great website. I have read all the info in the public domain on the importation process and this website hits it dead on. As a Canadian I am terribly ashamed to see our national government act in such a childish and irresponsible way. I spoke to RIV on 2 occasions and all I received was arrogance.
Why? Why is the Canadian Government trying to screw us out of a good deal. Most Likely, the money we save from the purchasing of a cheaper priced car from the U.S. will still end up being spent in Canada. Instead of wasting the cash on a car here, the extra money saved will be spent on other products or services here. Why can’t the Canadian Government see that logic?
When the conservatives jammed Free Trade down our throats during the
Mulroney years, we understood it to be Big Business and Government
leveraging their political weight in the pursuit of self interest. Here
we are some 20 years later and the balance of financial advantage is
finally on the side of the Canadian consumer, yet….the newest
incarnation of the conservative government bluntly offends its country-
wide constituency by imposing b*llsh*t measures to prevent the exact benefit
to which Free Trade was “supposed” to provide. We can’t import a vehicle
because of a trivial little part? Please! This is an affront to the sensibilites
of all Canadians. You are screwing us and WE KNOW IT! Considering that a
politician’s prime objective is to stay in office…it is pretty obvious
we should do on election day with regards to U.S. whipping boy Harper!
I was fortunate to be tipped off to this typical Canadian scenario since I was about to buy a used 2008 CTS for my wife. I’ve bought nine vehicles in the US since 1980 and I knew as soon as enough people caught on to it something would make it harder or more expensive. But impossible? They used to adjust the duty on imports to protect our economy, or so they said. Since free trade is this the only means they have left? The gov’t is not responsible. I blame the car makers for doing this to appease the Can. dealers by eliminating competition. They know our country is run by idiots and knew exactly what to do. The government would have just charged a hefty per car tax and claimed it was for increased crime costs. This would have been accepted by the general population since it doesn’t involve safety or emissions, something like the $100 import fee for air conditioning.
Haha…Adam says ‘i hate you canada’…I find that comment so ammusing, and the fact that some people are mad at auto manufacturer’s and some are mad at the government. We SHOULD be mad at both, but we pay our taxes to the government so ultimatly they are responsible for mandating what the auto manufacturers are doing.
I understand why GM is doing this…they are a business, and their business will loose money if our vehicles are able to come into Canada. I hate GM/toyota/honda, etc for being such jerks, especially when many consumers generally tend to buy from one specific manufacturer….BUT….at the end of the day, it’s all about dollars and cents.
The government…well, I pay my taxes to the government and they are supposed to protect me from these billion dollar corporations that are trying to use little loopeholes to take advantage of me, and our hard earned TAXED money that we are taxed on yet again with GST, PST, and every fee and registration tax under the sun.
I have received a few emails from my MP, and ive found that by calling the Transport Ministers assistant(someone posted the number), and just keep emailing your MP’s office, you WILL get a response.
I am VERY persistant, and everyone else has to be to.
